Julián Castro’s Potential 2020 Presidential Run and 2018 Political Plans
Julián Castro, the former San Antonio mayor and Housing and Urban Development secretary under President Barack Obama, has expressed interest in running for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020. However, before making a final decision, he is focused on helping young, progressive Democrats get elected in his home state of Texas.
Castro recently launched the Opportunity First PAC to support political candidates and will be making his first trip to an early voting state on February 16 to speak to New Hampshire Young Democrats. In a recent interview with CNN, Castro discussed his potential presidential run and his plans for the upcoming months.
When asked about running for President in 2020, Castro stated, “Yeah, I’m interested, but whether or not I end up doing it — I’ll decide that later.” He emphasized that his priority for now is supporting Democratic candidates in the 2018 midterm elections and will make a decision about his own future by the end of the year.
Castro also mentioned his plans to visit states like New Hampshire to better understand the political landscape and prepare for a potential 2020 campaign. He acknowledged the importance of the 2018 elections in shaping the field for the next presidential race.
In regards to Texas, Castro expressed optimism about the Democrats’ chances in the state, citing a shift towards the party in the 2016 election. He highlighted the potential for Democratic gains in the Texas House of Representatives and Senate, as well as the competitive Senate race between Beto O’Rourke and Ted Cruz.
Overall, Castro’s focus remains on supporting Democratic candidates and building a strong foundation for the party’s future. As he continues to engage with voters and assess the political landscape, his decision on a potential presidential run in 2020 will be informed by the outcomes of the upcoming elections.
