Implementing High-Quality Instructional Materials: A Case Study from Aldine Independent School District
The Aldine Independent School District in Texas has made headlines as the first district in the state to adopt a high-quality, knowledge-based reading curriculum. This shift has had a significant impact on both teachers and students, with a focus on equipping educators with the tools they need to ensure student success.
Before the adoption of the new curriculum, only 30 percent of third graders in Aldine were reading at or above grade level. However, with the implementation of the Amplify CKLA curriculum, significant progress has been made. Within just two years, 50 percent of third graders were reading at or above grade level, and the percentage of students scoring “well below” benchmark dropped from 48 percent to 36 percent.
One of the key factors contributing to this success has been the emphasis on curriculum-based professional learning for teachers. Instructional specialists at Reed Academy have been working closely with educators to ensure they are prepared to deliver strong instruction that meets the needs of all students. Through in-depth curriculum study sessions and collaborative discussions, teachers have been able to internalize the curriculum and identify the most critical ideas and skills for their students.
Additionally, the district has revamped grade-level meetings to focus on curriculum study rather than administrative tasks. This shift has allowed for more inclusive discussions and a wider view of classroom practice and learning. By building trust among teachers and providing ongoing support, the district is setting itself up for long-lasting success in improving student outcomes.
The success of the Aldine Independent School District serves as a model for other districts looking to elevate their instructional practices and improve student achievement. By prioritizing curriculum-based professional learning and equipping teachers with the tools they need, districts can make significant strides in supporting student success.
