Texas Democratic Lawmaker Ousted in Primary Runoff After Supporting Ban on Gender-Affirming Care for Minors

In a stunning upset, Texas Democratic lawmaker Rep. Shawn Thierry was ousted in a primary runoff after breaking with her party to support a ban on gender-affirming care for minors. Thierry, who had served four terms in the Texas House, lost by double-digits to challenger Lauren Ashley Simmons, a union organizer.

Thierry’s support for the controversial ban on gender-affirming care sparked outrage among her Democratic colleagues and energized LGBTQ+ groups nationwide. Former Houston Mayor Annise Parker, president and CEO of the LGBTQ+ Victory Fund, said Thierry’s vote was the reason she faced a tough race, but it was her doubling down on misinformation that ultimately led to her defeat.

Simmons, who had the support of LGBTQ+ groups in Texas and across the country, is now favored to win the heavily Democratic district in November. Political action committees like the Human Rights Campaign and Equality Texas rallied behind Simmons, running ads, hosting block walks, and mobilizing support for her campaign.

Thierry defended her vote on the ban, saying it aligned with her conscience and the values of her constituency. However, her support for the measure, along with her vocal defense of it, ultimately cost her the election.

The race has sent a clear message to Democratic elected officials, according to Rice University political science professor Mark Jones. He said that breaking with the party on key issues could lead to being primaried and removed from office, similar to the purge and litmus tests seen in the Republican Party.

Simmons’ victory marks a significant moment for LGBTQ+ rights and visibility in Texas, as well as a warning to politicians who may consider straying from party lines on important issues.
