Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s ‘Fake Eyelashes’ Comment Sparks Racism Accusations in House Committee Meeting
The House Oversight Committee meeting last week took a heated turn when Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., made a controversial comment about Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, during a discussion on holding Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress. Greene’s remark about Crockett’s “fake eyelashes” sparked accusations of racism from the Texas lawmaker.
Crockett responded on CNN, stating that Greene’s comment was intentionally racist, as it played into negative stereotypes about Black women wearing makeup and beautifying themselves. The exchange between the two congresswomen led to a heated back-and-forth, with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-NY, condemning Greene’s attack on Crockett’s appearance.
The incident drew criticism from Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., who likened the House committee meeting to a chaotic TV show. Ocasio-Cortez defended her stance against bullying, while Fetterman called her response “absurd.”
Despite the controversy, Crockett does not expect any repercussions for Greene’s behavior. She expressed disappointment in the lack of accountability for Greene’s actions, especially after her recent failed attempt to remove House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La.
The clash between Greene and Crockett highlights the ongoing tensions and divisions within Congress, as lawmakers continue to navigate sensitive issues of race and representation.
