In a show of unity and support, Texas delegates to the Democratic National Convention voted overwhelmingly on a Monday night conference call to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris as the party’s presidential nominee. The decision came just one day after President Joe Biden announced his exit from the race, solidifying Harris as the frontrunner for the nomination.

The Texas Democratic Party announced in a news release that the state’s DNC delegates were firmly behind Harris, citing her historic tenure as the first Black and South Asian woman to hold the office of Vice President. Gilberto Hinojosa, Texas Democratic Party and national delegation chair, praised Harris for her unwavering commitment to justice, equity, and progress for all Americans.

With 273 delegates set to represent Texas at the Chicago convention, at least 260 delegates voted to support Harris on the Monday night call, while only six voted against. Although the vote was nonbinding, it reflected the overwhelming confidence in Harris as the potential nominee.

A survey by the Associated Press confirmed that Harris has secured the backing of enough Democratic delegates to easily surpass the required threshold for the nomination. She has garnered support from key party leaders, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, following Biden’s endorsement of Harris as his successor.

Dallas delegate Jeff Strater reported that fundraising for Harris has exceeded expectations, with a surge of enthusiasm and support for her campaign. Delegate Mark Greene of Fort Worth described Monday night’s call as “high energy” and expressed optimism about the party’s prospects moving forward.

As Harris continues to gain momentum and support within the Democratic Party, the stage is set for a historic nomination that could see her become the first female president of the United States. The excitement and enthusiasm surrounding her candidacy are palpable, signaling a united front as Democrats gear up for the upcoming election.
