Rep. Rashida Tlaib to Deliver Working Families Party Response to President Biden’s State of the Union Address

In an exciting announcement today, the Working Families Party revealed that U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib (MI-13) will be delivering the Party’s response to President Biden’s State of the Union Address. This will be the fifth time the WFP has provided a response to a president’s address before a joint session of Congress.

Known for her fearless progressive stance and dedication to fighting for working people, Rep. Tlaib is set to articulate a vision for meeting the basic needs of the American people and ensuring that all can thrive. With child poverty on the rise and costs increasing for essentials like housing, healthcare, and childcare, Tlaib’s response is eagerly anticipated.

Previous responses to State of the Union Addresses were given by Rep. Jamaal Bowman, Rep. Ayanna Pressley, Wisconsin Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes, and former U.S. Rep. Donna Edwards. Rep. Tlaib expressed her honor in delivering the Working Families Party response and emphasized the urgency for Democrats to act now on critical issues such as healthcare, climate, housing, and voting rights.

Representing Michigan’s 13th Congressional District since 2019, Rep. Tlaib has been a vocal advocate for ending childhood poverty, providing financial relief during the pandemic, ensuring clean water as a human right, and investing in affordable housing and community development. She has a history of breaking barriers, being the first Muslim woman to serve in the Michigan state legislature and one of the first Muslim women elected to Congress.

The Working Families Party, known as the political party of the multiracial working class, is supporting a slate of candidates across the country to build a “Working Families Majority” in Congress. On the same evening as the State of the Union, three candidates on the WFP Majority slate will be participating in the Texas Democratic primaries.
