Houston theater and rap fans are in for a unique experience as Stages in Houston brings a fresh perspective to the classic tale of Othello by William Shakespeare. The reimagined production, titled “Othello: Remix,” combines the timeless themes of romance, betrayal, and manipulation with the vibrant energy of hip-hop.
Directed by Eboni Bell Darcy, who also serves as Stages’ Associate Artistic Director of Inclusion, Engagement, and Training, the production features a modern-day twist on the Shakespearean classic. The story follows a ‘Jay-Z’ type character, Othello, who rises from nothing to become a hip-hop mogul, only to face betrayal and deceit from his best friend, Lago, reminiscent of Eminem.
Darcy emphasizes the timelessness of Shakespeare’s storytelling, highlighting the parallels between the bard’s work and modern-day rap artists. The fusion of rhythm, poetry, and storytelling in both mediums allows for a fresh interpretation of the classic play.
“Othello: Remix” first premiered in Chicago and has now made its way to Houston, where it will run at Stages on Rosine St. through June 9, 2024. The production features a talented cast of local actors, including Cameron Nunley, Gabe Mullins, and Isaac Lopez, who bring a new energy to the characters.
