Texas State Senator Eddie Lucio Jr. (D-Brownsville) has announced his retirement after more than 30 years in office, sparking both celebration and criticism from various groups and individuals.

At a press conference in Harlingen, Texas, Lucio cited family reasons and a desire to pursue his own personal ministry as the main factors behind his decision to not seek reelection. His son, State House Rep. Eddie Lucio III, also announced earlier this year that he would not seek reelection.

Throughout his tenure, Lucio has faced backlash for voting against his Democratic colleagues on several key issues, including his support for a bill banning abortions after six weeks of pregnancy and his stance on transgender student participation in school athletics. Additionally, his ties to private prisons and the bonuses he received from prison companies have drawn scrutiny.

Despite the criticism, Lucio has consistently won reelection in District 27, with Sara Stapleton-Barrera being his strongest challenger in recent years. Stapleton-Barrera, who ran against Lucio in 2020, expressed relief at his retirement and emphasized the need for a progressive leader to take his place.

Political science professor Dr. Mònica Clua noted that Lucio’s departure marks the end of an era for right-leaning Texas Democrats, potentially paving the way for more progressive candidates to run for his seat. While Lucio’s retirement may signal a shift in Texas politics, Clua emphasized that systemic change will require continued effort from multiple individuals.

As the news of Lucio’s retirement spreads, the focus now shifts to the upcoming election and the potential for a new era in Texas politics.
