Meet the Democratic frontrunners hoping to unseat Texas Sen. Ted Cruz
The race for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate in Texas is heating up as voters have nine candidates to choose from to challenge incumbent Senator Ted Cruz in 2024. The frontrunners in the race are State Sen. Roland Gutierrez and Congressman Colin Allred, both of whom are vying for the opportunity to unseat Cruz.
Allred, a former professional football player and lawyer, has focused his campaign on issues such as voting rights, healthcare, jobs, and abortion rights. He has pledged to vote to codify Roe v. Wade if elected to the Senate, but has faced criticism for controversial stances on issues like the Israel-Hamas War and border policies.
On the other hand, Gutierrez, an immigration lawyer and progressive candidate, has positioned himself as the most progressive candidate in the race. He has called for a federal ban on assault weapons, a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas War, and a single-payer health insurance system. Gutierrez believes that his progressive stance is what could make him the right fit to defeat Cruz in the general election.
Despite their efforts, both Gutierrez and Allred face an uphill battle against Cruz, as recent polls show the incumbent senator easily beating both candidates. With the likelihood of a runoff election between the two Democratic frontrunners, the race for the nomination is far from over. Voters will have to decide who they believe has the best chance of unseating Cruz and bringing change to Texas politics.
