Wave of Violence in Fort Worth’s West 7th District Sparks Concern and Action

The West 7th district in Fort Worth has been experiencing a recent wave of violence, leaving residents and visitors concerned about their safety. From a TCU student being shot to death last September to a 29-year-old losing their life after a fight just last month, the city has been grappling with the issue.

In response to the rising crime rates, the city has taken steps to enhance safety measures in the West 7th cultural district. This includes increased lighting and a heavier police presence, especially on weekends. Despite the city reporting a decrease in crimes against people and property from 2022 to 2023, local business owners like Abby Slayton Tobin are still feeling the impact.

Tobin, the owner of There’s No Place Like Home, a furniture store in the heart of the West 7th district, stated that crime has been on the rise since the onset of COVID-19. She mentioned that the area has gained a reputation for being dangerous, which has affected her business even during daytime hours, leading to a significant drop in sales.

Fort Worth police data shows that between March 1, 2023, and Feb. 2, 2024, West 7th reported fewer violent crimes compared to other entertainment districts in the city. The city has enlisted the help of Safe Night, a public safety consulting firm, to assess the safety of entertainment districts and provide recommendations to reduce crime.

Safe Night plans to create an accreditation program for businesses, like bars, to prove they are taking steps to enhance safety. While business owners like Tobin appreciate the city’s efforts to improve safety, they emphasize the need for a holistic approach that addresses the root causes of crime beyond just focusing on bars.

Safe Night is set to present their recommendations to the city of Fort Worth in August, with a focus on fostering collaboration between law enforcement, businesses, and the community to create a safer environment for all.
