Rep. Lloyd Doggett Calls on President Biden to Withdraw from 2024 Presidential Race

Rep. Lloyd Doggett, a Democrat from Texas, made headlines today by becoming the first sitting Democrat in Congress to publicly call for President Joe Biden to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race. Doggett cited Biden’s poor debate performance and his consistent trailing behind Donald Trump in surveys as reasons for his bold statement.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Doggett emphasized the importance of preventing an authoritarian takeover by Trump and his allies, stating, “Too much is at stake to risk a Trump victory—too great a risk to assume that what could not be turned around in a year, what was not turned around in the debate, can be turned around now.”

While other Democrats have expressed concerns privately, Doggett, who has served in Congress since 1995, is the first lawmaker to openly call for Biden’s withdrawal. He represents a blue district based in Austin, Texas, and has a long history in politics.

Doggett acknowledged Biden’s accomplishments as president but argued that it is time for a new generation of leaders to step up and unite the country. He pointed out that Biden has consistently trailed behind Democratic senators in key states and most polls, making it difficult for him to defeat Trump in the upcoming election.

After Doggett’s call, other Democrats, including candidate Adam Frisch from Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District, also urged Biden to exit the race. Frisch stated, “We deserve better. President Biden should do what’s best for the country and withdraw from the race.”

The debate over Biden’s candidacy has sparked a larger conversation within the Democratic Party, with some suggesting that Vice President Kamala Harris or other potential candidates would be more effective against Trump. Rep. Jared Golden of Maine even expressed his acceptance of a potential Trump victory, stating that democracy “will be just fine” under Trump.

As the debate within the party continues, it remains to be seen how Biden and his team will respond to calls for his withdrawal from the race. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
