U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren Rallies for Progressive Candidates in Texas
U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts made a significant impact during her visit to Texas this week, where she rallied for progressive candidates Jessica Cisneros and Greg Casar. The Democratic primaries in Texas have been closely watched, especially with Cisneros challenging nine-term incumbent Henry Cuellar once again.
Cuellar, known for his conservative stances on issues like abortion, immigration, and gun control, narrowly defeated Cisneros in 2020. Warren showed her support for Cisneros’ democratic policies, including immigration reform and abortion access, during a rally at San Antonio’s Cherrity Bar on Tuesday evening. She is also scheduled to back Casar at a separate event in East Austin on Wednesday.
The race in Texas’ 28th Congressional District, which spans from Laredo to the Rio Grande Valley to San Antonio, has gained attention with the recent FBI raid on Cuellar’s home and office. Cuellar denies any wrongdoing and is cooperating with authorities. In addition to Cisneros and Cuellar, there is a third candidate, former educator Tanya Benavides, in the mix.
In District 35, which stretches from downtown San Antonio to just North of Austin along I-35, former Austin City Councilman Greg Casar is running for an open seat against tough competition. Former San Antonio City Councilwoman Rebecca Viagran, state Representative Eddie Rodriguez, and business consultant and activist Carla-Joy Sisco are also vying for the seat.
Warren’s visit follows a recent appearance by New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in San Antonio to support Cisneros and Casar. Both candidates have also received the endorsement of Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, further solidifying their progressive platforms.
With the support of influential figures like Warren, Ocasio-Cortez, and Sanders, Cisneros and Casar are poised to make a significant impact on the Democratic primaries in Texas. Their campaigns represent a push for progressive change within the party and the country as a whole.
