Democrats Eye Texas Senate Seat in Super Tuesday Showdown
The race for the U.S. Senate seat in Texas is heating up as Democrats look to flip the seat currently held by Republican Sen. Ted Cruz. With the primary election on Super Tuesday, all eyes are on U.S. Rep. Colin Allred and state Sen. Roland Gutierrez, who have emerged as the frontrunners in the Democratic race.
Allred, a former NFL player and three-term congressman from Dallas, has raised an impressive $21 million for his campaign, making him a formidable opponent for Cruz. If elected, Allred would become Texas’ first Black senator, adding to the historic significance of this race.
The primary election also includes seven other Democratic candidates, including state Rep. Carl Sherman. If no candidate wins a majority of the vote, the race will head to a runoff on May 28.
The close margin of victory for Cruz in 2018 against Beto O’Rourke has given Democrats hope that they can flip the seat this time around. However, Texas Democrats have faced challenges in recent years, with O’Rourke losing by double digits in his gubernatorial race in 2022.
Despite the uphill battle, Democrats believe that Texas, along with Florida, presents their best chance for upsets in November as they seek to maintain their slim majority in the Senate. With the race heating up, all eyes are on Texas as the primary election unfolds.
