Jackson Lee, who had revealed her cancer diagnosis last month, received an outpouring of condolences from both Democrats and Republicans following the news of her passing. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi hailed her as a “powerful voice for our Constitution and human rights,” while Texas Governor Greg Abbott described her as a “proud Texan and a tireless advocate for the people of Houston.”

The congresswoman, who was first elected in 1994 and served nearly 30 years in the House, was a staunch advocate for criminal justice reform and reparations for Black Americans. She played a key role in making Juneteenth a federal holiday and in expanding protections for marginalized groups in the Violence Against Women Act.

According to The Texas Tribune, Jackson Lee was a well-known figure in her district, often attending local events such as graduations, funerals, and baby showers. In a 2020 interview with KPRC 2, she expressed her desire to leave behind a legacy of helping others, stating, “If you were in a ditch, I want my story to be that I tried to help you.”

Her passing marks the end of a long and impactful career in public service, leaving a lasting legacy of advocacy and compassion.
