Political Advertisement Criticized for “Republican-Style” Tactics in TX-35 Democratic Primary Race

The Eddie For Texas Congressional campaign has come under fire for a political advertisement that critics say employs “Republican-style” tactics to attack Greg Casar, Eddie Rodriguez’s opponent in the TX-35 Democratic primary race.

The mailer, which was sent to voters in Austin and San Antonio, features a photo of Rodriguez standing in front of a single-family home and highlights a law he helped pass through the Texas Legislature aimed at creating affordable housing. However, when the booklet is opened, it reveals a more aggressive message targeting Casar for his handling of homelessness and affordable housing issues.

The ad has sparked backlash from progressives, including 12 Democratic elected officials who signed an open letter urging Rodriguez to stop using divisive campaign tactics. The letter emphasizes the importance of working towards a bold vision of affordable housing for all and criticizes the mailer’s messaging about the poor and unhoused.

Prominent signers of the letter include Travis County District Attorney José Garza, County Attorney Delia Garza, and several City Council Members from Austin and San Antonio. The signers express disappointment in the ad’s portrayal of Casar and its resemblance to attacks made by right-wing groups.

In response to the criticism, a representative from Rodriguez’s campaign defended the mailer, stating that Rodriguez has a strong record of progressive accomplishments, including affordable housing initiatives and support for public schools.

The controversy comes as early voting for the March 1 primary election is set to begin on February 14. Casar’s campaign has emphasized their commitment to progressive values, including Medicare for All, affordable housing, and reproductive rights.

The ad has ignited a debate within the Democratic party about the use of negative campaigning and the definition of progressivism in the TX-35 race. Voters will have the opportunity to weigh in on these issues as they cast their ballots in the upcoming primary election.
