Toplines & Key Facts: Rep. Julie Johnson Advances to Nov. Election
State Rep. Julie Johnson Makes History, Advances to November Election
In a historic victory, Texas State Representative Julie Johnson has advanced to the November general election after winning the primary for the Congressional seat left open by Rep. Colin Allred. If she wins, Johnson would be the first openly LGBTQ+ legislator from the South in Congress.
Johnson faced a competitive primary with nine other opponents, ultimately prevailing with 50.1% of the votes. She emphasized her experience as a trial lawyer and her tenure in the Texas Legislature during her campaign. With the rise of MAGA extremism and anti-LGBTQ+ legislation in Texas, Johnson’s win is seen as a significant milestone for progressive voices in the state.
As a state legislator and attorney specializing in personal injury cases, family law, and mediation, Johnson has been a champion for various causes, including women’s reproductive rights and LGBTQ+ rights. She authored the historic “Live Well Texas” bill and has been a vocal advocate for marginalized communities.
Looking ahead to the November election, Johnson expressed the importance of unity and voter turnout in the face of challenges from MAGA Republicans. Ricardo Martinez, CEO of Equality Texas, praised Johnson’s advocacy and expressed confidence in her ability to represent LGBTQ+ Texans in Congress.
