In 2022, the country witnessed a surge in efforts to ban books in schools and libraries, with researchers predicting even more challenges in 2023 as Republican-backed laws aim to restrict LGBTQ and racial content in educational materials. While activists from various political backgrounds have sought to restrict certain forms of literature, the majority of book challenges have come from conservative-leaning groups, according to researchers.

Jonathan Friedman, the director of free expression and education programs at PEN America, highlighted the diverse range of issues that different groups find controversial in literature, from historic representations of racism to LGBTQ identities. The report by PEN America revealed that there were at least 2,532 book challenges affecting 1,648 titles from July 2021 to June 2022.

Conservative groups have predominantly targeted books written by or about people of color and LGBTQ individuals, citing concerns about sexual content or messaging. On the other hand, liberal efforts have focused on challenging books with racist language or imagery in the name of anti-racism or progressive ideals.

Legislators and conservative organizations like Moms For Liberty and No Left Turn in Education have spearheaded the book-banning efforts, with laws in states such as Florida, Utah, Missouri, and Texas aiming to restrict discussions on race, gender, and sexual orientation in classrooms. These efforts have raised concerns among free expression advocates, who warn of the potential consequences for educators who defy these restrictions.

In response to the ongoing challenges, progressive literary groups have emphasized the importance of diversifying literature and promoting inclusivity. While some schools have made changes to their reading lists in light of complaints, organizations like PEN America and the American Library Association have condemned all forms of book banning as censorship.

As the debate over book censorship continues to unfold, the clash between conservative and liberal perspectives on what constitutes appropriate content in educational materials remains a contentious issue nationwide.
