Texas Democrats Optimistic with Biden’s Withdrawal and Harris Endorsement for Down-Ballot Races

President Joe Biden’s decision to end his reelection bid and endorse Vice President Kamala Harris as the party’s nominee for the White House has sparked a wave of optimism among Texas Democrats. Concerns about down-ballot races being affected by Biden’s poor debate performance in June have been alleviated, with many now hopeful that Harris can lead the charge to defeat former President Donald Trump in November.

“This is the right move for the Democratic Party,” said Rowlett state Rep. Rhetta Andrews Bowers, a delegate at the Democratic National Convention. “If we all get behind Vice President Harris, we will win.”

Democratic strategist Matt Angle echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the stark contrast between Harris and Trump. “You’ve got a capable and vibrant Kamala Harris running against a broke-down and destructive threat to democracy in Donald Trump, and that’s going to help every Democrat on the ballot,” Angle said.

Kathleen Thompson, executive director of Progress Texas, highlighted Harris’s ability to connect with women concerned about reproductive health care and other critical issues. Democrats nationwide have been focusing on the loss of abortion rights to persuade voters that Trump is not the right choice for America.

While Texas Republican Party Chairman Abraham George expressed confidence in the state’s strong Republican base, Democrats are gearing up for a competitive race. A Democrat hasn’t won a Texas presidential contest since 1976, but the party is counting on Harris to make a difference in critical races.

The decision to endorse Harris has also shifted the focus to down-ballot races, where Democrats are hoping to protect incumbents and make gains in legislative and judicial seats. With a new nominee in the spotlight, Democrats are optimistic about their chances in November, but they acknowledge the need for hard work and grassroots efforts to secure victories.

Overall, the endorsement of Vice President Harris has injected new energy and optimism into the Texas Democratic Party, setting the stage for a competitive and potentially game-changing election in November.
