Support for Abortion Rights Strong Among Texas Voters, Survey Finds
The Texas abortion law, S.B. 8, implemented a year ago, has sparked a shift in the opinions of Texas voters, with a majority now expressing strong support for abortion rights. According to a recent survey, six in 10 voters in Texas support abortion being available in all or most cases, with only 11% favoring a total ban on abortion.
The survey, conducted by polling firm PerryUndem, revealed that key voting blocs such as women, Latinos, and younger voters are increasingly in favor of abortion rights. The data release comes in the wake of the controversial S.B. 8 law, which relies on civil lawsuits to enforce a prohibition on most abortions after about six weeks.
The issue of abortion is expected to be a motivating factor for voters in the upcoming November elections, particularly in the gubernatorial matchup between Democrat Beto O’Rourke, a supporter of abortion rights, and Republican incumbent Greg Abbott, who signed S.B. 8 into law. O’Rourke supporters listed abortion access as a top issue, while Abbott supporters prioritized other issues such as border security, inflation, and the economy.
Overall, the survey reflects a significant shift in public opinion regarding abortion rights in Texas, with the issue likely to play a crucial role in shaping the political landscape in the state.
