Top Democrats Vying for 2024 Presidential Nomination as Biden Drops Out
President Biden’s shocking announcement that he is dropping out of the 2024 race has thrown the Democratic ticket into disarray. With the top of the Democratic ticket now up for grabs, Vice President Kamala Harris has emerged as a frontrunner for the nomination.
Shortly after Biden’s announcement, he threw his support behind Harris, calling her selection as vice president “the best decision I’ve made.” However, the power to choose his replacement lies with the Democrat delegates, who will have to consolidate behind a new nominee.
In addition to Harris, several other politicians are viewed as possible contenders for the Democratic nomination. California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, and Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar are among those who have been mentioned as potential candidates.
DNC chair Jaime Harrison has stated that the Party will undertake a transparent and orderly process to select a candidate who can defeat Donald Trump in November. DNC executive committee member Alan Clendenin expects a “supermajority” of delegates to coalesce around Harris in the coming days.
The race for the Democratic nomination is heating up, with prominent figures like Sen. Joe Manchin, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg also being considered as potential candidates. The coming days will be crucial as the Democratic Party works to unite behind a new nominee to take on the challenge of the 2024 election.
