Multiple Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Locations Close in North Texas and Minnesota
The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema locations in North Texas and one in Minnesota have closed their doors as the local franchise partner filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. The closed North Texas locations include Las Colinas, Richardson, Lake Highlands, Dallas, and Denton, with an additional location in Woodbury, Minnesota also shutting down.
The franchisee expressed deep sadness over the closure, thanking employees for their hard work and loyal customers for their support. Efforts were made to contact all 600-plus employees before the theaters closed.
The closure was attributed to guest counts not rebounding from the COVID-19 pandemic and other economic impacts. The first quarter of 2024 was noted as the worst performing quarter in movie-going history.
In addition to the Alamo Drafthouse closures, the Angelika Film Center’s Plano location also announced its closure after 20 years in business.
Despite the closures, there may be hope for an Alamo Drafthouse return to DFW, as the company is working to get back up and running in the affected cities. The parent company of Alamo Drafthouse initially filed for bankruptcy in 2021 but was able to restructure with the help of Fortress Investment Group and Altamont Capital.
While the closures are a blow to movie-goers in the area, Alamo Drafthouse locations in other cities are operating as normal with plans for continued expansion across the country.
