Texas Democrats Divided on President Biden’s Future in the Race
Texas Democrats are in a heated debate over whether President Biden should continue in the race for re-election. Congressman Lloyd Doggett from Austin has become the first member of Congress to publicly call on Biden to withdraw from the race following his disastrous debate performance last Thursday and ongoing concerns about his age.
“I am hopeful that he will make the painful and difficult decision to withdraw. I respectfully call on him to do so,” Rep. Doggett stated in a press release.
The call for Biden to step down has sparked a division within the Democratic party in Texas. Former HUD Secretary Julian Castro of San Antonio also expressed his belief that another Democrat would have a better chance at defeating Trump in the upcoming election.
The debate over Biden’s candidacy has raised questions about the logistics of bringing in a new candidate just months before the election. State Rep. Ron Reynolds, D-Missouri City, believes that if a change is to be made, it should happen at the Democratic National Convention next month in Chicago.
Despite the controversy surrounding Biden’s candidacy, his campaign announced a record-breaking fundraising haul of $127 million in June, with $38 million coming in after the debate. The campaign remains confident in its ability to secure the nomination and defeat Trump in the upcoming election.
With four months remaining until the election, the debate over Biden’s candidacy continues to dominate the political landscape in Texas. President Biden is set to meet with Democratic governors at the White House and participate in his first post-debate television interview on ABC. The future of the Democratic ticket remains uncertain as the party grapples with the decision of whether Biden should continue in the race.
